11.13 for a friend

When I was walking to the upstair Redline subway at Jackson Station in the Friday everning, I heard the sound of "Evening Primrose". I wondered that whether it was real or my illusion. I scrounged for it, and I felt I was strange in other people's eyes.

Near to the public seating, I saw an old Asian women sat on a campstool was playing the urheen. She wore an old blue coat, like old work-cloth style, a pair of calico printing shoes and a pair of coffee khakis trousers. Her black hair seemed like artificial, and her fingers was frostbited.

At this cold night, she was waiting for the next train to go back home. Not only me hearing her music at that moment, but only I do have the black hair except her wig. At this cold

The Norwegian Nobel Committee 2009

2009-10-13 12:03:07 阅读140 评论0 132009/10 Oct13

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a committee of five, appointed by the Storting (the Norwegain parliament). According to the rules laid down by the Storting, election to the committee is for a six-year term, and members can be re-elected. The committee's composition reflects the relative strengths of the political parties in the Storting. Although this is not a requirement, all committee members have been Norwegian nationals.

Robert Nozick (November 16, 1938 – January 23, 2002) was an American philosopher and professor at Harvard University. He was educated at Columbia (A.B. 1959, summa cum laude), where he studied with Sidney Morgenbesser, at Princeton (Ph.D. 1963), and Oxford as a Fulbright Scholar. He was a prominent American political philosopher in the 1970s and 1980s. He did additional but less influential work in such subjects as decision theory and epistemology. His Anarchy, State, and Utopia (1974) was a libertarian answer to John Rawls's A Theory of Justice, published in 1971. He was born in Brooklyn, the son of a Jewish entrepreneur from Russia, and married the American poet Gjertrud Schnackenberg. Nozick died in 2002 after a prolonged struggle with cancer. His remains are interred at

World3 model

2009-9-25 22:44:16 阅读112 评论1 252009/09 Sept25

The World3 model was a computer simulation of interactions between population, industrial growth, food production and limits in the ecosystems of the Earth. It was originally produced and used by a Club of Rome study that produced the model and the book The Limits to Growth. The principal creators of the model were Donella Meadows, Dennis Meadows, and J?rgen Randers.

The model was documented in the book Dynamics of Growth in a Finite World. It added new features to Jay W. Forrester's World2 model. Since World3 was originally created it has had minor tweaks to get to the World3/91 model used in the book Beyond the Limits and later was tweaked to get the World3/2000 model distributed by the

Economic vandalism
Sep 17th 2009
From The Economist print edition

A protectionist move that is bad politics, bad economics, bad diplomacy and hurts America. Did we miss anything?

YOU can be fairly sure that when a government slips an announcement out at nine o’clock on a Friday night, it is not proud of what it is doing. That is one of the only things that makes sense about Barack Obama’s decision to break a commitment he, along with other G20 leaders, reaffirmed last April: to avoid protectionist measures at a time of great economic peril. In every other

Henry Sidgwick

Henry Sidgwick (May 31, 1838–August 28, 1900) was an English Utilitarian philosopher. He was one of the founders and first president of the Society for Psychical Research, a member of the Metaphysical Society, and promoted the higher education of women.

He was born at Skipton in Yorkshire, where his father, the Reverend W. Sidgwick (d. 1841), was headmaster of the local grammar school, Ermysted's Grammar School. Henry himself was educated at Rugby (where his cousin, subsequently his brother-in-law, Edward White Benson – later Archbishop of Canterbury – was a master), and at Trinity College, Cambridge. While at Trinity, Sidgwick became a member of the Cambridge Apostles. In 1859 he was senior classic, 33rd wrangler, chancellor's medallist and Craven

Carrowmore
by Lucie Brock-Broido

All about Carrowmore the lambs
Were blotched blue, belonging.

They were waiting for carnage or
Snuff. This is why they are born

To begin with, to end.
Ruminants do not frighten

At anything--gorge in the soil, butcher
Noise, the mere graze of predators.

All about Carrowmore
The rain quells for three days.

I remember how cold I was, the botched
Job of traveling. And just so.

Wherever I went I came with me.
She buried her bone barrette

In the ground's woolly shaft.
A tear of her hair, an old gift

To the burnt other who went
First. My thick braid, my ornament--

It was originally created by Dr. Barry B. Hughes of the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado. The model is free to use, and can be accessed in an online version or downloaded for stand alone use. There is extensive documentation of the use of the software in the help system and an online user forum for user questions.

IFs has also been written about by Dr. Hughes in the book Exploring and Shaping International Futures with Evan Hillebrand, along with other reports and publications all of which can be found on the project's website.

There are three main functions to IFs, which each provide users with different opportunities to access historic or forecast da
